The purpose of science is not to analyze or describe but to make useful models of the world. A model is useful if it allows us to get use out of it.
Science in general, was pursued as a field of interest by mankind for two major reasons for quenching his thirst for knowledge and for assisting his fellow man in his time of need. Needless to say, both objectives were realized rather marvellously and were profoundly acknowledged by one and all (except for the lab rats). But in this day and age of the fuel-guzzling hummers, the CFC infested aerosols and the apparently catastrophic global-warming phenomenon, man has to again turn to science and technology to deliver him from the clutches of his own inadequacy of being able to find a secure position in nature for himself.
In order to alleviate some of this pressure, if not the entire cataclysm, AXIS'09 is proud to present in association with SHRISHTI, an AXIS initiative, wherein participants are encouraged to design devices that can be used for social benefits and also in the better interests of the already degrading environment. For the overly ambitious few, it is the stepping stone to winning both the humanitarian and the Nobel Prize in one go. After all, Technology should be an important ingredient. It may be and should be a tool for social development.
