CONTRAPTION
Problem statement
Main task:
- Basket a ball such that the ball undergoes projectile motion before entering
the basket.
- Minimum diameter of the ball is 4 cm. Maximum diameter of the basket = (diameter
of the ball + 5cm).
- Initially the ball has to be a height that is less than or equal to the height
of the basket.
- Minimum horizontal distance between initial position of ball and the basket
should be 2 feet.
Intermediate tasks:
- Draw a circle. The circle has to be traced and NOT stamped or displayed
as a screen saver.
- Blow off a candle and light it again. MAGIC CANDLES are NOT allowed. (You
can have as many steps in between as you wish, but unless the candle is lit
again the task won't be considered as completed as no points will be awarded).
- Place a card on a glass and a coin on the card. Make arrangement for sliding
the card out and dropping the coin in the glass.
- Rotate a pencil through an angle of 60 degrees (+ or - 10 degrees error
is permitted) and bring it to rest at the new position without the use of a
stopper. The pencil has to be rotated about any point ON the pencil, provided
that point remains fixed.
- Burst a balloon.
Rules and scoring criteria
Rules:
- 5 copies of flow chart of the contraption indicating the energy conversions
and links should be submitted prior to judging.
- The main chain leading to the completion of the main problem statement has
to have minimum of 2 intermediate tasks. Other tasks may be performed in chains
which may branch out from the main chain.
- Minimum of 2 intermediate tasks have to be completed. You may or may not attempt
other intermediate tasks. Failing to attempt the main problem statement will
lead to disqualification of the team.
- There will be 2 attempts for each team.
- The entire contraption should fit in an area of 5 x 5 feet.
- Time of 15 minutes will be given to each team for displaying the contraption
to the judges.
- A setup time of 4 hours will be given.
- A team can have at maximum 5 members from same or different institutes.
Scoring criterion:
- 300 points will be given for completion of the main task.
- Draw a circle: 75 points.
- Blow off a candle and light it again: 100 points.
- Drop the coin in glass by sliding the card: 75 points.
- Rotate a pencil by 60 degrees without using a stopper: 100 points.
- Burst a balloon: 50 points.
- Each energy conversion will be given 25 points for the first time 15 for second
repetition and 10 for third repetition of the same conversion. Any subsequent
energy conversions will be considered as links.
- Energy conversion A to B, is NOT same as B to A.
- Potential energy and Kinetic energy will NOT be considered as different forms
of energy. They will be considered as mechanical energy.
- Each link will be given 5 points.
- For parallel contraption (the parallel connection must merge again), the points
earned in each branch will be multiplied by the no. of branches.
- One human intervention will be allowed without penalty for the entire 2 attempts.
50 points will be negated for each subsequent intervention.
- When there is a human intervention, it has to start from the previous link
or previous energy conversion.
- Exceeding the time will cost you 1 point per extra second.
- Decision of organisers and judges will be FINAL and BINDING. Arguing with
judges and organisers can lead to disqualification.
