A thousand years ago, our ancestors were obsessed with the idea of transfiguring lead into gold. One fine day, they decided that they would rather devote their time to more fruitful pursuits and in a couple of centuries, they came across a hundred odd elements which they realized were completely unique entities and extremely difficult to classify. Go ask Newlands and Mendeleev if you don’t believe us. A few decades later, Messrs Kekule and Cannizaro proceeded to add a few more chapters to our already heavy chemistry textbooks.
But we are indebted to them for making our lives simpler to an extent we never even dreamt of. Imagine life without petrol, plastics and other day to day necessities and you’ll know what we mean. AXIS ’09 presents a celebration of chemistry through the medium of its Chemical Engineering event which tests practicality of their solutions when applied to real world situations.
